The European Union and its 27 member states do not seem to like the fact that on May 20, 2023, air traffic between Georgia and the Russian Federation was reactivated. A formal complaint was lodged with the Georgian government.
Previously, Russia had banned air traffic for several years and indefinitely due to a decree issued by Vladimir Putin. This flight ban was lifted and on May 20, 2023 the first connections between Georgia and the Russian Federation were reactivated.
Local TV channel Mtavari Arkhi reports that the EU states handed over their complaint through Ambassador Paweł Herczyński and Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Economy of Georgia. Among other things, the protest note states that the reactivation of air traffic with Russia would contradict the unanimous decision of the EU governments that the airspace of the European Union would be closed to Russian planes and airlines. In return, the Russian Federation denies overflights, take-offs and landings of all aircraft registered in countries that practice sanctions.
However, Georgia itself was banned indefinitely even before the Russian Federation army invaded Ukraine. The background was, among other things, that the government did not want to bow to pressure from Russia in relation to a proposed law. The flight ban has now been lifted.
