On September 15, 2024, a Qantas Airbus A330 caused damage to runway 03 during takeoff on Perth flight.
The incident occurred as flight QF71 was taking off from Perth to Singapore. The damaged runway is about 20 metres long and had only recently been repaved. This resulted in some international flights having to take off without baggage to reduce weight on a shorter runway.
A Silkway B747 cargo plane was diverted to Adelaide, preventing it from landing on the best runway. The Qantas flight was able to continue its journey to Singapore without further problems. Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook has called for an investigation into the incident, raising doubts about the quality of the repair work.
