Memmingen Airport recorded a total of 614,000 passengers between January and March 2024, bringing it closer to the top ten German airports. The Bavarian State Office for Statistics reported that Memmingen handled around 2.8 million passengers last year and more than three million are expected this year.
By comparison, Nuremberg Airport registered 627,000 passengers in the same period, which corresponds to growth of 7.4 percent. Munich counted 7.9 million passengers in the first quarter, an increase of 14.2 percent compared to the previous year. Munich’s figures thus reached 80 percent of the passenger volume of 2019.
Memmingen has already significantly exceeded its pre-Corona figures in 2022 and could overtake Dortmund Airport in 2024 as a whole, which recorded around 2.9 million passengers in 2023. The largest airlines in Memmingen are Wizz Air, which serves destinations in southeastern Europe, and Ryanair, which flies to destinations in Italy, Spain, Greece, Great Britain and Ireland. Eurowings and Tui are also represented with holiday airlines to the Mediterranean.
The airport is planning to expand to meet growing demand. According to the airport association ADV, German airports counted 39.6 million passengers in the first quarter, an increase of 13.2 percent compared to the same period last year. However, the ADV stresses that air traffic in Germany is growing more slowly than in other major European markets and complains about high air traffic taxes, security costs and air traffic control fees.
